December's Charity of the Month:
Valley Santa

This holiday season, hundreds of dedicated volunteers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, are busy shopping for toys for thousands of children who, because of their family’s financial difficulties, would otherwise not receive gifts.

Anthony P. John, CLU, ChFC, of Bear Creek, Pennsylvania, a 19-year MDRT member and Bronze Knight, presented a $2,500 grant from the MDRT Foundation to Valley Santa, a holiday toy purchase program for needy children. John was awarded a 2005 Quality of Life Award in recognition in for his tireless volunteer work with this organization.

“Without the numerous hours of volunteer time, which John has given to read letters, shop, wrap presents and deliver gifts, many children would not have presents each holiday season,” said Valley Santa coordinator Ruth Slamon Borland.

This grant will be used to purchase toys for Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, children aged 12 and younger whose parents are facing unemployment and financial problems this holiday season. Parents requesting toys from Valley Santa must write a letter to Valley Santa explaining their need and their children’s wish list.

The local department store closely works with Valley Santa, offering discounted prices for toys along with a wrapping area and free wrapping paper. More than 300 volunteers work together to read letters, purchase and wrap gifts along with delivering gifts to needy families.
