September’s Charity of the Month: Renewal House

Renewal House, based in Nashville, Tennessee, received a Worldwide grant from the MDRT Foundation for $1,000 USD to support addicted mothers and their children during the challenges of recovery.

William V. Parsons Jr., CLU, a 25-year member also from Nashville, sponsored the grant. Parsons wrote that he wanted to endorse the grant “to give families that otherwise would be torn apart by addiction the chance to heal and start new lives together in recovery.”

The funds will go in support of Renewal House’s Adopt-an-Apartment Program, preparing an apartment for an addicted mother and her family that is coming into the Renewal House recovery community.

One mother, Gwindell, is a great example of why Renewal House’s program is necessary and effective. Gwindell lives with her 2-year-old daughter, Courtnee. Gwindell graduated from the residential recovery program earlier this year, and during her time in residence, she completed a training course to become a certified nurse technician. The MDRT Foundation just learned that Gwindell passed her licensing exam and now currently holds a full-time position with healthcare organization.

“We greatly appreciate the support of the MDRT Foundation for Renewal House’s Adopt-an-Apartment program. The generosity of the MDRT members helps make it possible for Renewal House to provide a welcoming apartment home for mothers and children like Gwindell and Courtnee as they build new lives in recovery,” says Jude A. White, executive director of Renewal House.

Renewal House is the only non-profit, long-term residential recovery community in middle Tennessee that allows addicted, often homeless, mothers in treatment to remain with their children so that the family can heal together. Parsons became aware of the important work of Renewal House through media profiles of the families participating in the program. The mothers struggle against incredible challenges to remain clean and sober, maintain custody of their children, improve their parenting skills and become financially self-supporting.
