Top Quality of Life Winner: William J. McMann Jr.

Because of the efforts of 18-year MDRT member and Gold Knight William J. McMann Jr., of Danville, Virginia, families of critically ill patients at Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) will now have a place to rest during the stressful time of staying with their loved one during their hospital stay.

McMann was awarded the top Quality of Life grant of $25,000 on Main Platform for his selfless dedication to the planning and constructing of Foundation House — a project funded through Danville Regional Health Foundation (DRHF) to provide affordable and close housing to families who are forced to spend many days at the hospital while their loved one receive intensive care treatment.

DRHF decided to purchase this dilapidated house in order to provide comfortable, safe and convenient housing for the hundreds of relatives that live more than 25 miles away from the DRMC. Prior to the opening of Foundation House, which is located opposite DRMC, many relatives were often forced to sleep in uncomfortable chairs in the small hospital rooms.

As soon as McMann heard about the need for this house in his community, he offered to whatever was needed to make sure the house was completely refurnished and restored. McMann spent hours of his free time requesting donations from businesses and individuals to get items such as bedding and furniture along with services such as plumbing and electrical work.

“Bill’s enthusiasm, personal commitment and community contacts made him a vital part of the success of the Foundation House. He is a major reason that the home is open today and is as beautiful as it is,” Margie E. Wilkinson, Executive Director of DRMC said.

DRHF was founded in 1996 with the mission of encouraging and assisting the development of health-related initiatives within Danville and ultimately promoting a healthier lifestyle for residents in this community.

The Quality of Life Grant Program was founded in 1990 as a means to honor MDRT members who exhibit outstanding volunteerism in their community.
