Newsroom Good Samaritan Foundation: Inspiring Future Leaders in Washington, D.C. The Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) empowers inner-city high school students with the confidence and tools to market themselves in the job place, and, in the process, inspires the traits of successful leadership.
The MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to GSF, which was sponsored by Jim V. Durkin, CFP, CLU, a 20-year MDRT member and Diamond Knight from Vienna, Virginia. This grant will be used to fund GSF’s Student Training Opportunity Program (STOP) — a community-based year-round youth development program. STOP provides youth from low-income families with job-related skill workshops, after-school tutoring and mentoring, and computer training. GSF was founded in 1993 by former Washington Redskin football players Art Monk, Charles Mann, Tim Johnson and Earnest Byner. GSF serves Washington, D.C.'s inner-city youth — many of whom are the first in their family to graduate from high school. GSF promotes academic excellence and the importance of a college education. Former STOP student Derwin Fields said, "With the help of this program, I know there are people I can depend on, and I learned to be responsible enough to let others rely on me. Because of the program, I now realize the potential of just one person." Fields graduated from STOP in 2003 and is currently majoring in engineering at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. |
