AUGUST'S CHARITY OF THE MONTH: BRIDGE OF BOOKS FOUNDATION
The New Jersey
Chapter of the Bridge of Books Foundation (BoB-NJ), based in Rumson,
New Jersey, was awarded a Worldwide grant for $2,500
USD to use book to fulfill its mission of bringing the world and all
its possibilities to at-risk children.
This grant was
sponsored by William
Van Winkle, CFP, MSFS, a 24-year MDRT
member and Silver Knight from Tinton Falls, New Jersey. These grant
funds
will
purchase approximately 1,250 books for its specialized book inventory,
primarily Spanish and bilingual books, made available to pre-school
aged children.
Many low-income families have to make difficult choices between health
care, food and rent. Children's books are unaffordable luxuries for
families such as these. BoB-NJ provides new and used books directly
to children and children's organizations, and since its creation in
January 2003 has donated more than 14,500 books to more than 40 agencies
serving at-risk children throughout New Jersey. BoB-NJ provides a wide
range of books that meet the needs of children from pre-school through
high school, including culturally and ethnically diverse books. There
is no cost to the benefiting organization or the children and the books
are theirs to keep.
"What this group does is extremely critical because since reading
at an early age really determines how successful a child can be later
in life," said Van Winkle.
