February's Charity of the Month:

YMCA of Monroe County

Professionally-trained staff work with W.I.S.E. program participants to create a tailored fitness regime according to each individual’s health and fitness level.

It is a universal fact that exercise encourages improved heart and lung circulation and muscle strength.  According to the American College of Sports Medicine, exercise is also beneficial for people with cancer, by reducing fatigue, increasing physical endurance and improving overall quality of life.

The W.I.S.E. (Working out to Increase Strength and Endurance) Program, a therapeutic exercise program, at the YMCA of Monroe County, in Bloomington, Indiana, helps people with cancer and cancer survivors improve their physical and mental well-being in a supportive environment.

This year, the MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the YMCA of Monroe County to fund the W.I.S.E Program.  This grant was sponsored by Susan D. Wier, CFP, ChFC, an 11-year MDRT member and Gold Knight from Bloomington, Indiana.

“[W.I.S.E.] is a wonderful program to help those who have fought cancer to begin to rebuild their bodies and their minds.” Dier explained. “Helping people build a new quality of life helps them return to the community stronger and ready to resume their normal life.”

Each participant’s exercise program is designed according to the type of cancer they have, the progress of cancer treatment and their physical fitness level.
