July’s Charity of the Month: YMCA

The MDRT Foundation is supporting a 125-year legacy of improving communities throughout the United States by awarding two grants to local chapters of the YMCA.

Curtis presents a $2,500 grant to Debbie Wright, marketing and development director of the YMCA of Amarillo, Texas.

The MDRT Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant to the YMCA of Springfield, Massachusetts, and a $2,500 grant to the YMCA of Amarillo, Texas.

These Quality of Life Awards were presented in honor of the volunteerism of Jean Marie A. Deliso, a seven-year MDRT member from Springfield, Massachusetts, and Daryl Curtis, CLU, ChFC, a 29-year MDRT member from Amarillo, Texas. Deliso served as chairwoman of the board for the YMCA Springfield, and has volunteered many hours serving on several YMCA committees. Curtis currently serves as secretary of the board for YMCA Amarillo, and is chair of the committee that plans the All-Star Sports Festival — an annual fundraising event.

The grant awarded to YMCA Springfield will be used to fund the Leadership Club and Youth and Government program — two national programs of the YMCA’s Teen Leadership Initiative. The YMCA Amarillo grant will be used to also fund the Youth and Government program along with various after-school programs that encourage youth to take a positive role in their community.

During Leadership Club, youth meet weekly with adult mentors engaging in skill- and character-building activities. This program provides youth with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, a commitment to volunteerism, along with college preparation and job-readiness skills. The Youth and Government program provides high school students with training and practice in government studies. This hands-on program encourages understanding of the legislative process and public policy.

The YMCA was founded in 1881, and offers family-based programs that include childcare, community development, teen leadership, and sports and wellness activities regardless of the participants' ability to pay. It is through these programs that the YMCA continues to fulfill its mission of building strong children, strong families and strong communities.
