Charity of the Month:
Make-A-Wish Foundation- New Jersey
Strength,
courage and bravery are just some of the traits that fallen police officer
Mary Ann Collura shared with the terminally ill children that she devoted
her time to help. The MDRT Foundation awarded Make-A-Wish Foundation-New
Jersey (MAW-NJ) with a $5,000 grant in honor of Collura’s memory to
continue a legacy of making magical wishes come true for children living
through devastating illnesses.
Stuart
Cohen, a nine-year MDRT member from Fair Lawn, New Jersey,
sponsored this grant. “Collura was a wonderful and loving person. I
remember the day she took the time out of her day to play with my disabled
daughter, Stephanie. This is a memory I will always take with me,” Cohen
said. “It is very appropriate to give this grant to MAW-NJ, in memory
of a person who was so involved in the lives of children.”
Collura an 18-year
veteran and the first female officer of Fair Lawn Police Department,
was shot and killed during a vehicle pursuit on April 17, 2003. Along
with serving and protecting the Fair Lawn community, Collura was also
passionate about the welfare of children.
Cohen will present
the $5,000 grant to MAW-NJ on March 30, 2005, at the “Battle of the
Blue” police basketball tournament, an event which Collura founded six
years ago to raise money for MAW-NJ. Collura’s mother, brother and two
sisters will attend the grant presentation, and will see firsthand how
Collura’s passion of helping those in need continues to live on today.
MAW-NJ serves children
between the ages of 30 months and 18 years old living with life-threatening
illnesses. This grant will be used to fund the wishes of four children
in New Jersey. Since 1983, more than 3,600 children have visited Disney
World for the first time, swam with dolphins and met their favorite
professional athletes along with other unique childhood fantasies through
the generous services of MAW-NJ.
