Prudential CEO Announced as Circle of Life
Award Recipient

Park Ridge, Illinois (January 28, 2002) — Arthur F. Ryan of Newark, New Jersey, chairman and chief executive officer of The Prudential Insurance Company of America, has been announced as the 2002 Circle of Life Award honoree by the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) Foundation. He will be honored at an awards luncheon on Thursday, April 11 in Dryden Hall at Prudential's home office in Newark, New Jersey.

Begun in 1999, the Circle of Life Award offers a way for the MDRT Foundation to pay tribute to those who exemplify a generous nature, a charitable spirit, strong community involvement and industry leadership. "Art Ryan truly exemplifies all of these characteristics," said 2002 MDRT Foundation President Allen R. Bruce, CLU, ChFC, of Silver Spring, Maryland. "His community and industry leadership, and Prudential's generous contributions to the MDRT Foundation make Art Ryan the ideal recipient for the Circle of Life Award. Having him as our 2002 recipient is an honor for all of us."

Ryan, who has been chairman and chief executive officer of Prudential since 1994, heads one of the largest diversified financial institutions in the world. The Prudential, the biggest corporate sponsor of the MDRT Foundation, has more than 56,000 employees providing a wide range of insurance and other financial services to more than 15 million people. Ryan is the first chairman and chief executive officer to be appointed from outside The Prudential in the company's 127-year history.

Before assuming his post at The Prudential, Ryan was with Chase Manhattan Bank from 1972 to 1994, serving in various executive positions including president and chief operating officer from 1990 to 1994. In that capacity, he had direct operating responsibility for all of the bank's business.

A true business and community leader, Ryan is a past president of the New York State Bankers Association and a past member of the Business Advisory Council at the Carnegie Mellon Graduate School of Industrial Administration. In addition, he is co-chair of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and New Jersey United for Higher School Standards. He is also a member of the national board of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and a member of the boards of trustees of New York Presbyterian Hospital, Providence College, Achieve, Inc., the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) and New American Schools.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from Providence College, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. He attended graduate school at American University while serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He holds an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from Providence College as well as a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Dowling College in Oakdale, New York. He and his wife, Patricia, are the parents of four children.
