September's Charity of the Month: Renewal House

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proclaimed September as the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  Alcohol and drug addiction tear apart hundreds of thousands of families, from all economic backgrounds, throughout the United States each year.  Renewal House (RH), a residential substance abuse addiction program, offers hope and opportunity for mothers committed to breaking their substance abuse addictions.

The MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to RH, based in Nashville, Tennessee, to help fund this residential program that allows mothers and their children to remain together while they are in recovery treatment.  This grant was sponsored by William V. Parsons, CLU, a 27-year MDRT member from Nashville, Tennessee.

Studies have shown that guilt and fear about leaving their children to attend a substance abuse rehabilitation program is the number one reason that many mothers do not seek or stay in treatment.  RH offers women throughout Tennessee with a rare opportunity to create a brighter future, free of substance abuse, for their family without the fear of losing their children.  While their mothers attend therapy and counseling sessions, RH trained staff and volunteers help children develop their social and academic skills.

This program is a five-phase residential program which participants can complete in six to 15 months depending upon their assessed needs and individual abilities. Each mother is required to pay 30 percent toward the full cost of her treatment services. Since 1996, more than 150 families have participated in this program.
