Newsroom August's Charity of the Month: Pony Bird Inc.
An MDRT Foundation grant provided a much-needed solution to help improve patient safety at Pony Bird Inc (PB) — a residential treatment center for severely disabled children and adults in Mapaville, Missouri. The MDRT Foundation
awarded a $4,500 grant to PB to help fund the cost of an overhead lift system that is used to transfer physically disabled patients in and out of their wheelchairs during recreation and physical therapy treatments. This grant was sponsored by Richard C. Hemphill, CRPS, CSA, a 12-year member and Silver Knight from Chesterfield, Missouri. The patients at PB are unable to move without the assistance of a caregiver, and this lift-system will increase patient freedom and provide a safety net for both patient and PB employees. “The [lift] system helps create a safe and secure environment for both staff and individuals in their homes. We have already seen a significant drop in the number of injuries with the purchase of the new lift-system,” wrote Christi Schumacher, director of development at Pony Bird Inc. PB serves physically disabled children and adults in St. Louis City, St. Charles and Jefferson County in Missouri — providing residential, recreational, educational and skill-building adult day programming services to the physically disabled at its state of the art three-building campus. Since 1977, PB’s residential center has provided 24-hour professional care to individuals with physical and mental disabilities that focus on enriching social, physical and emotional development. |
