ORBIS Flying Eye HospitalSky's the Limit? Not for the MDRT Foundation

On August 6, 2003, the MDRT Foundation will present a $10,000 grant to ORBIS International, based in New York, New York, to fund its Flying Eye Hospital. This grant, one of the 2003 Worldwide Grants awarded this year, was sponsored by Mark Rubinstein, a Bronze Knight from New City, New York.

ORBIS strengthens the capabilities of local healthcare providers to prevent and treat blindness. Through the funding provided by the MDRT Foundation, ORBIS will be utilizing its Flying Eye Hospital to provide valuable training to healthcare providers across the globe.

On board the DC-10, local healthcare providers work side-by-side with ORBIS volunteer medical team members to perform surgery.

To date, nearly 500 training programs in 81 countries have enhanced the skills of more than 55,000 healthcare professionals. These local eye professionals have mastered new skills and begun treating patients and training others. Their efforts have resulted in benefiting an estimated 16.5 million people.

During the next year, the Flying Eye Hospital will be travelling to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Philippines and Cuba.
