June’s Charity of the Month:

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Ohio

Untreated mental illness and a lack of community resources can often lead to hopelessness for those affected. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Ohio (NAMI Ohio) is a statewide, grassroots organization that provides education, support and advocacy services to people suffering from mental illness and their families to provide stability and renewed hope.

Robert D. Sills, CLU, ChFC, a 25-year MDRT member and Gold Knight from Columbus, Ohio, presented a $5,000 grant to NAMI Ohio to support their Grassroots Advocacy Network Education Program.

“[During the grant presentation at NAMI Ohio’s annual fundraiser] I saw a quilt with photos of people who were assisted by NAMI Ohio," Sills said. "As I looked at each of the photos, I saw a photo of one of my clients whose life, sadly, ended prematurely due to her constant battle with mental illness. It was then that I knew that the MDRT Foundation grant would greatly help NAMI Ohio in their ongoing efforts to fight and address mental illness."

More than 308,600 people in Ohio suffer from a neurological brain disorder. NAMI Ohio works hard to increase the available funding and resources that help alleviate the stigma often associated with mental illness. NAMI Ohio advocates testify before the state legislature, educate business and education leaders, and sit on state planning and advisory committees.

NAMI Ohio was founded in 1982 and has a
successful history of affecting public policy and legislation regarding care and resources for persons with mental illness. Currently NAMO Ohio serves more than 10,000 individuals and families whose lives have been affected by a serious mental illness.
