Newsroom May's Charity of the Month: Mommy's Light Lives On Fund
Each Mother’s Day, thousands of colorful bouquets are bought, greeting cards are sent, sentimental phone calls are placed and families unite to honor their mother. On this day, thousands of children also celebrate in a heartfelt and special way – by memorializing the lives of their deceased mothers. Mommy’s Light Lives On Fund is a nonprofit organization that brings joy to children by helping them honor their late mothers. This year, the MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Mommy’s Light. This grant was sponsored by Joan L. Kistler, CLU, ChFC, a 24-year MDRT member and Bronze Knight from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. When family members contact Mommy’s Light, a volunteer visits the child to help decide on a tradition to best honor their mother’s memory. Children often decide on family traditions, such as planting flowers, baking a cake or taking a trip to the zoo or the movies. Mommy’s Light helps organize and provide the tools and details necessary to carry out the family tradition. Mommy’s Light was founded by Mary Murphy in 1997 when she was told that she had terminal cancer. Because of this diagnosis, she began to prepare her 10-year-old son for the possibility of her death. Murphy and her son often baked cookies together, and they both decided that this would be a fitting tribute in keeping her spirit alive. Unfortunately, just three months after she founded Mommy’s Light, Murphy lost her battle with cancer. Murphy founded Mommy’s Light to bring comfort to hundreds of Delaware Valley region children who lose their mother each year, as well as provide assistance in coping with terminal illness. In addition, Mommy’s Light also provides bereavement education to school counselors, social workers and bereavement professionals. |
