February’s Charity of the Month: Achilles Track Club

The legacy of Achilles Track Club Inc. (ATC) founder Dick Traum, Ph.D., is continuing to promote personal achievement and physical development to hundreds of disabled athletes. Traum knows the challenges that many of these veterans face firsthand — in 1976 Traum was the first amputee to run a marathon, which he did in New York, New York.

“[ATC] allows people with disabilities to see their abilities, to build their confidence and, in the process, inspire everyone who is privileged to see them in action,” said Schulman.

ATC’s programs incorporate sports training as a means to speed and strengthen existing rehabilitative programs for newly disabled veterans — many of whom are amputees. More than 300 veterans have participated in ATC’s marathon training and will participate in upcoming marathons using crutches, wheelchairs and hand-crank bicycles.

“I am doing more now than I ever did before getting injured…I want to show that I can still get out there and do things,” said 1st Lt. Melissa Stockwell, an ATC participant who was injured in the war in Iraq.

ATC is based in New York, New York. Since its founding in 1983, ATC has grown significantly and currently has 43 chapters in the United States and more than 110 chapters in 63 countries throughout the world.
