MDRT Foundation Responds to Hurricane Katrina Disaster

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful and violent hurricanes in U.S. history, unleashed a trail of enormous destruction and human suffering across the Gulf Coast. In response, the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation established the MDRT Foundation Hurricane Katrina Relief fund to provide assistance to the survivors of this natural disaster, which ripped apart communities and lives in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

“Through the news coverage of Hurricane Katrina, we saw the desperate faces of the survivors, and the magnitude of the destruction of the 90,000 square miles of the Gulf Coast,” said 2006 MDRT Foundation President Donald J. Benedetti, of Yardville, New Jersey. “Your MDRT Foundation was quick in its response to the help provide much needed support for this national disaster relief effort.”

The generous spirit of individual donors was clearly evident when contributions reached $100,000 in the first week of this relief fund. In order to maximize the impact of donors’ generosity, the MDRT Foundation matched dollar for dollar the first $50,000. MDRT also matched contributions up to a total of $50,000. In a gracious example of industry unity, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) decided to double their members’ contributions matching the first $25,000, and the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies (NAILBA) Foundation matched the first $12,000 of their members’ contributions to the MDRT Foundation Hurricane Relief Fund. Baltimore Life Insurance also matched its agents’ contributions and the Foundation received a generous $10,000 contribution from MDRT Japan.

The MDRT Foundation has identified up to three organizations that will receive 100 percent of the fund’s contributions, including the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross. Each of these organizations have been on the front lines of this relief effort providing food, water, shelter, clothing, personal hygiene items and mental health counseling to the hundreds and thousands that have lost everything as a result of this catastrophic storm.

The MDRT Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to all of those that contributed to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, which will be used to channel hope and strength into the lives of those that have survived this disaster.
