Newsroom January Charity of the Month: CLASS Ltd. People with developmental disabilities are faced with numerous challenges and obstacles that can hinder their chances of securing homeownership. CLASS Ltd., a Kansas based community organization, is opening the doors of homeownership for the developmentally disabled through its "Breaking Down Barriers to Achieve Dreams" program — a homeownership program tailored to help the developmentally disabled live out their dream of owning and managing a home. The MDRT Foundation awarded CLASS Ltd. $2,500 grant to support the "Breaking Down Barriers to Achieve Dreams" program. The Quality of Life Grant was awarded in honor of the volunteerism of George M. Barberich, CLU, ChFC, a five-year MDRT member and Bronze Knight from Pittsburg, Kansas. Barberich has volunteered for CLASS Ltd. for more than seven years and during this time has been actively involved in many successful fundraising events. Currently, Barberich serves on the CLASS Ltd. Board of Trustees and on three committees. The "Breaking Down Barriers to Achieve Dreams" program is designed to increase homeownership opportunities for the developmentally disabled through advocacy and community awareness, home buying and maintenance classes along with ongoing support for new homeowners. CLASS Ltd. partners with local realtors and financial institutions and other community volunteers to create a program tailored for each applicant's developmental abilities, financial resources and personal needs. For the last 30 years, CLASS Ltd. has provided community-based services for more than 630 people with developmental disabilities in a four-county area of southeast Kansas. CLASS activities are developed to promote independence and dignity for the developmentally disabled, while encouraging integration into community life.
