Newsroom Creating Healthy Smiles in South Carolina An MDRT Foundation grant is helping to create healthy smiles for the uninsured and underinsured children and individuals throughout the rural underserved Pee Dee region of South Carolina.
The MDRT Foundation awarded CareFIRST Carolina Foundation (CCF) a USD 2,500 Quality of Life grant in honor of the exemplary volunteerism of M.B. Godbold Jr., CLU, LUTCF, an 11-year MDRT member and Silver Knight from Cheraw, South Carolina. This grant was used to support CCF’s Making a Smile Happen program — a mobile dental clinic which provides affordable dental services to hose in need in five underserved rural counties of South Carolina. “[Godbold’s] commitment to helping those in need…along with his tremendous energy and enthusiasm has been an invaluable contribution,” wrote Ann M. Lewis, executive director of CCF. “His efforts have made it possible for CCF to grow and prosper…and to begin assisting the many families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for healthcare services.” Most dental diseases are preventable, however, without access to regular dental care, dental disease can develop into serious chronic conditions that can cause overall poor health. According to the American Dental Association, gum disease, which is caused by poor oral health care, may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and preterm labor. The mobile dental clinic offers people who do not have health insurance, or have inadequate health insurance coverage, the opportunity to obtain preventative oral health care. This dental clinic was founded by CareSouth Carolina, a nonprofit community health center. The clinic offers oral healthcare to all patients according to their ability to pay, based on a sliding scale fee system. |
