March's Charity of the Month: Rainbow House

IFor the abused, neglected and developmentally disabled youth that reside in the five cottages operated by Rainbow House, these buildings are much more than a long-term residential facility—they are “home sweet home.”

Since the mid 1980s RH has provided a safe and nurturing home for thousands of vulnerable youth throughout a 40-county area of North Carolina.  This year the MDRT Foundation awarded a $2,500 Quality of Life grant to Rainbow House in honor of the volunteerism of Susan N. Whittington, CLU, CFP, a 16-year MDRT member and Silver Knight from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.  Whittington is the current RH board chair, serves on two committees and takes an active role in fund-raising activities.

“Susan is one of the most dedicated individuals I have had the pleasure of working with.  Her commitment [to RH] has been a leading force in the growth we have experienced...” said Glenda P. Andrews, CEO of RH.

This grant will be used to fund the cost of two computers and printers for the Education and Providing for Disadvantaged and Developmentally Disabled Youth Program.  The majority of youth served by this program come from a low socio-economic background and have had limited access to computer training.  These computers will provide the tools needed to execute the RH educational curriculum that encourages youth to pursue their future college and career goals.

Rainbow House was founded by Charles Sheppard in 1987, and has served more than 2,600 children.  In addition to the residential program Rainbow House also provides emergency shelter and family counseling for North Carolina residents.
