Newsroom January's Charity of the Month: Hands of the Carpenter
There is never a good time for a car to break down. When Sonya, a single parent with a very limited income, discovered her car needed expensive automobile repairs, she knew she could not afford to have it fixed. Without reliable transportation, Sonya feared losing her new job — a job she had worked hard to secure after being recently homeless.
Sonya contacted Hands of The Carpenter (HOTC), a nonprofit organization that provides automobile and home repairs to single parents and widows, to ask for their assistance. HOTC is committed to helping women like Sonya, fix their homes and automobiles when they have no other option (all repairs are provided at no cost).
This year the MDRT Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant to HOTC to fund its home and automobile repair program. This grant was sponsored by William M. Upson, ChFC, CLU, a 13-year MDRT member and Gold Knight from Walnut Creek, California.
HOTC, which is based in Denver, Colorado, partners with local trade organizations and businesses that provide materials and volunteer services needed for repairs. HOTC currently works with more than 21 businesses and more than 50 skilled individuals throughout the Denver metropolitan area to offer needed services such as carpentry, plumbing, roofing, electrical, and automobile maintenance and repairs.
HOTC fixed Sonya’s car, allowing her to maintain her job so that she could continue to remain economically self-sufficient. Since 2003, HOTC has provided more than 500 repair services for more than 230 families in need throughout Denver. |
