Newsroom May’s Charity of the Month: Brain Tumor Foundation for Children Three years ago, Laura McCullough's 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare pediatric brain tumor called oligodendroglioma. The Butterfly Fund — a financial support program of the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children (BTFC) — offered McCullough and her family peace of mind amidst a devastating diagnosis.
The MDRT Foundation awarded BTFC a $5,000 grant to support the Butterfly Fund, a program that assists families as they financially cope with the crisis of their child’s brain and spinal cord tumor diagnosis. This grant was sponsored by Glen Jay Barber, CLTC, a nine-year MDRT member and Bronze Knight from Atlanta, Georgia.
Children who are diagnosed with brain tumors often have to spend many weeks and even months undergoing intensive treatment at the hospital. The Butterfly Fund also assists families with rent, mortgage, utility bills, car loan payments and other bills that a family may not be able to afford due to loss of work at the time of a child’s diagnosis and treatment. “This disease has also added a tremendous financial burden that I, as a single parent, simply cannot bear. The Butterfly Fund…has helped me to pay my household bills on a monthly basis. Without [this] assistance, I truly do not know where my family would be today,” said McCullough. BTFC was founded in 1983 by parents of children with tumors to help other families. Today BTFC serves children and families throughout the state of Georgia and children treated at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. |
