June's Charity of the Month: The Crossnore School

Crossnore School

Even after 96 years of operation the Crossnore School — a residential educational program for vulnerable children —still operates under the founders’ Drs. Eustace and Mary Martin Sloop’s guiding principle: Education is the best way for a child to rise above his circumstances.

The Crossnore School is located in Crossnore, North Carolina and provides a safe and nurturing place for children who can no longer live at home due to abuse or neglect. The MDRT Foundation awarded a USD 2,500 Quality of Life grant to the Crossnore School in honor of the volunteerism of Martha B. Dosher, CLU, a 35-year MDRT member from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dosher serves on the Crossnore School’s advocacy board and is responsible for promoting the school's mission throughout the community. "[Dosher] is always there when we need her," explained Phyllis H. Crain, executive director of the Crossnore School. “She has selflessly shared her time, energy and advice to help [the school].”

The Crossnore School serves approximately 80 children from 27 counties throughout North Carolina. Residents live in cottages set up in dormitory style with resident counselors who are trained to serve the unique needs of the children who have often suffered great hardships. Each cottage has a pet dog that the children look after, and all meals are eaten together as a family.

Education is a high priority for all Crossnore residents, and students are encouraged to pursue a higher education. Students also participate in tutoring, art, music and dance classes.
