Newsroom December’s Charity of the Month: Songs of Love
Songs of Love Foundation founder, John Beltzer, accepts the $25,000 MDRT Foundation grant from Scott Curran, CLU, ChFC (left). The MDRT Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Songs of Love Foundation, which will be used to produce 225 personalized songs for chronically or terminally ill children. This grant was sponsored by Scott Curran, CLU, ChFC, a 19-year MDRT member from Flanders, New Jersey. Songs of Love Foundation was founded by John Beltzer, an accomplished singer and songwriter, in honor of his late twin brother Julio. Since 1996, SOLF has been creating one-of-a-kind songs for children in more than 300 hospitals throughout the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom. Parents, doctors, nurses and social workers submit song requests to SOLF by completing a personal profile for the child with specific information about the child’s special interests, friends, pets and family members. SOLF relies on a nationwide network of approximately 350 talented musical artists to write and produce a personalized song that reflects the child’s favorite genre of music. Each child is presented with a finished CD of their song, along with the printed lyrics. Parents and hospital staff have noted that many children use their song as a therapeutic tool to alleviate anxiety during often painful medical treatment, or as inspiration to encourage their healing process. "Thank you for the beautiful song created for our Jordan. Sometimes at night when she’s in a lot of pain, we play her song and it helps to calm her and put her at peace,” explained a mother of a Songs of Love recipient.
