October’s Charity of the Month: Mary Crowley Cancer Research Center
A cancer diagnosis not only takes a tremendous emotional and physical toll, but often, also uproots the financial stability of the patient and their family. This is why the Mary Crowley Cancer Research Center (MCCRC) created the Patient Assistance Program to provide a financial safety-net to patients undergoing cancer clinical trials.
The MDRT Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to MCCRC, a national leader in cancer research that pioneers advancements in cancer treatment through gene-targeted therapies, cell based therapies and vaccines. This grant was awarded by Allan W. Newberry, CLU, a 37-year MDRT member and Bronze Knight from Dallas, Texas.
This grant will fund the Patient Assistance Program, which defrays underinsured medical expenses, as well as other cancer-related hardship expenses for patients and their families.
Since 1997, MCCRC has implemented more than 140 FDA approved clinical trials and treated more than 3,000 patients. MCCRC’s research engages the patient’s individual genetics and therapies are designed to stop the cancer growth without harm to healthy cells.
MCCRC is based in Dallas, Texas, and was founded in memory and with funding from the late Mary C. Crowley — a business woman and philanthropist who founded Home Interiors and Gifts Inc., a multi-million dollar home sales business. After her second cancer diagnosis in 1985, Crowley became dismayed with the advances of cancer research available and made it her personal quest to establish a cancer research center that would provide future hope and life-saving treatment to people with cancer.
