June's Charity of the Month:

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society–Mississippi Chapter

H. Larry Fortenberry, CLU, ChFC, presents a $5,000 check to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society–Missiscipp Chapter.

Each year almost 15,000 people in Mississippi are diagnosed with cancer, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society—Mississippi Chapter (LLS) is committed to serving the needs of people with cancer and helping them find personal empowerment after a devastating diagnosis.

The MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to LLS, which was sponsored by H. Larry Fortenberry, CLU, ChFC, a 32-year MDRT member and Platinum Knight from Jackson, Mississippi.

This grant will be used to fund two conferences that provide education, medical, financial and support services to people with cancer in underserved communities throughout Mississippi. The Hope Conference and Hope for the Delta Conference will take place in Jackson and Itta Bena, Mississippi, respectively.

Each conference is open free-of-charge to cancer patients, family members, caregivers and cancer survivors. Conference attendees will learn about cutting-edge medical technology, medical treatment advancements and emotional coping strategies from cancer specialists, medical experts and cancer survivors.

LLS collaborates with other cancer organizations and hospitals to create programming and peer support opportunities that enable people with cancer to take control of their personal cancer care.

“Education is one of the most important tools that a cancer survivor can have,” Fortenberry explained. “Education replaces fear and helps a cancer patient become an active participant in their recovery.”

LLS is the world’s largest volunteer organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Since 1948, LLS has been committed to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodkin’s disease and myeloma, while providing support services for patients and their families.
