Newsroom Kimball Receives Top Award Caring, compassion and commitment. These are three of the distinguishing attributes that describe the life led by 16-year-old Alexandra J. Miliotis before her death in 2002.
Miliotis lost her battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia. In her memory, “Alex’s Team” Foundation (ATF) was founded to support the often overlooked and under-funded respite and educational programs for nurses caring for children with cancer. During the Excalibur Dinner at the 2006 MDRT Annual Meeting, Brent R. Kimball, CFP, ChFC, an 18-year MDRT member and Diamond Knight from Concord, New Hampshire, was presented with a $25,000 grant on behalf of his exemplary volunteerism with ATF. “While it was Alexandra’s spirit…that inspired the Foundation, it was Brent’s direction, management and execution that made it a reality,” said Philip Vacaro Jr., ATF executive director. “[Brent] stepped to the front, assuming the responsibility for turning an inspiration and an idea into an organization with unique programs at two of the leading medical institutions in pediatric care in the world: Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School.” According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1,500 children will die annually from cancer. ATF is dedicated to fighting this devastating disease by improving the quality of life for pediatric cancer patients and their families while furthering advancements in medical research. The Alexandra J. Miliotis Pediatric Oncology Research Fund supports Harvard medical students’ participation in pediatric oncology, with the goal of exploring new treatments for cancer patients.
