Indiana University: The Mother and Baby Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya

When a woman becomes pregnant in Kenya, her future immediately can become a life-and-death situation for both her and her unborn child. Due to a combination of social misconceptions about mainstream medicine and a lack of access to medical care, maternal and infant mortality rates remain among the world’s highest.

In April 2005 during the Spring Phonathon at OneAmerica in Indianapolis, Indiana, the MDRT Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant, which was sponsored by 36-year MDRT member and Excalibur Knight Jerry D. Semler, CLU, of Indianapolis, Indiana, to Dr. Jim Lemmons, director of neonatal-perinatal medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis. This grant will be used to help fund The Mother and Baby Hospital at the Moi University Medical Center in Eldoret, Kenya.

“When I see the commitment of the MDRT members during their Phonathon’s fundraising efforts, I am reminded of their generous spirit and compassion for those in the world who have less,” Lemmons said.

The Mother and Baby Hospital serves more than 10,000 mothers and their children across northwest Kenya. This new state-of-the art facility houses an operating rooms for delivery emergencies and a newborn intensive care unit where 40 infants at one time can be treated. In addition, the facility has educational spaces with classrooms, computers and library facilities for Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) students to continue their educational program while working at the hospital.

Lemmons is part of a team of medical professionals from IUSM who have made it their mission to bring hope to the people of Kenya by establishing an educational exchange program between IUSM and Moi University’s School of Medicine.

The goals of this program are to enhance educational and personal growth of medical students, build lasting relationships between American and Kenyan doctors and ultimately develop healthcare leaders in both countries. More than 200 IUSM students who have trained in Kenya through this exchange program have returned to Eldoret to continue their careers.
