2009 Quality of Life Grant Recipients


The MDRT Foundation is pleased to announce the following Quality of Life Award winners for 2009. This year, 22 members were selected for an award, granting a total of $100,000 to charities in honor of their selfless volunteerism.


$25,000 Award

Volunteer: R. Steve Briggs, CLU, ChFC

Grant funds the Learning Center, which provides educational development programs for people recovering from substance abuse

The Foundry Rescue Mission and Recovery Center: Bessemer, Ala.

$10,000 Award

Volunteer:  David C. Allen Sr., ChFC, LUTCF

Grant provides forensic interview services for children who are victims of physical or sexual abuse

Center for Child Protection: Austin, Texas

Volunteer: Lawrence J. Ganim

Grant funds the Ultimate Gift Fund, which assists families in need with rent, food, health insurance costs, job placement and counseling services

FSW: Bridgeport, Conn.

$5,000 Award

Volunteer: Michael R. Kura, RFP

Grant provides food, shelter and care to men and women who are homeless

Haven of Rest Ministries: Akron, Ohio

Volunteer: Douglas R. Peete, ChFC

Grant provides educational materials and financial assistance for patients with brain tumors and their families

beHeadStrong: Overland Park, Kan.

Grant funds a scholarship program for students in grades four through 11, and the Carson Reading Program to supply books for low-income families

Carson Scholars Fund Inc.: Timonium, Md.

$2,500 Award

$2,500 funds the Emergency Shelter to provide clothing, essential toiletries, meals and snacks, school transportation, medical care, and after-school tutoring for children and families in need

Child Crisis Center of El Paso: El Paso, Texas

Volunteer: James L. Butler, MSFS, CFP

$2,500 funds the Top Program, which provides community service opportunities for teens from low-income households

Wyman Center: Eureka, Mo.

Volunteer: David F. Canino, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 funds the food services center, which serves meals to people during an emergency or crisis

Rescue Mission: Syracuse, N.Y.

Volunteer: Wayne P. Davis, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 purchases food supplies for distribution to families in need

Rock River Valley Pantry: Rockford, Ill.

Volunteer: Dennis M. De Boer, LUTCF

$2,500 funds the Economic Crisis Program to provide case managers who work with individuals and families in financial crisis and/or at risk of becoming homeless

Community Crisis Center: Elgin, Ill.

$2,500 provides furnishings for the residential facility that serves children who have been temporarily or permanently removed from their home due to abuse or neglect

The Crossnore School: Crossnore, N.C.

$2,500 funds the Youth Basketball Program, which serves youth and children from low-income families

Yonge Street Mission: Oakville, Ontario, Canada

$2,500 funds partial and full tuition costs for individuals interested in volunteer opportunities so they can attend community service educational courses

Leadership Lafayette: Lafayette, Ind.

$2,500 funds the Prenatal Photography: Brief Moments for a Lifetime Program, which provides photography for families with terminally ill infants

The Haven Network for Perinatal Death and Bereavement: Rockford, Ill.

$2,500 funds a week-long summer camp in Georgia, which provides education, recreation and peer-networking programs for children living with juvenile diabetes

Camp Kudzu: Smyrna, Ga.

$2,500 funds operating costs for the existing clinical facility

Loew Vision Rehabilitation Institute: Los Angeles, Calif.

$2,500 funds the HELPS program, which provides health care and education to children and families living in extreme poverty in the Philippines

Little Children of the World (LCW): Vancouver, Wash.

East Tenth United Methodist Children & Youth Center: Indianapolis, Ind.

$2,500 funds the Sober Graduation Project, which promotes suicide prevention and awareness programs for youth

Fresno Survivors of Suicide Loss: Fresno, Calif.

$2,500 supports a medical clinic for underserved patients in Ecuador
