2008 Quality of Life Grant Recipients


The MDRT Foundation is pleased to announce the following Quality of Life Award winners for 2008. The monetary grant amounts awarded in honor of the top six grant honorees were announced during the 2008 MDRT Annual Meeting, June 22–26, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

This year, 15 recipients were selected for an award, granting a total of $82,500 to charities in the honor of the selfless volunteerism of 15 MDRT members.

 

 

$25,000 Award

Volunteer:  Thomas J. Gilliam, CLU

Grant funds the Rights of Passage Transitional Living program, which teaches education, employment skills, and financial self-sufficiency to youth who are homeless

Covenant House Missouri: St. Louis, Mo.

 

$10,000 Award

Volunteer:  P. Martin Peters, CLU, RHU

Grant provides funding for La Colonia Learning Opportunity Center, an after-school and weekend learning center

Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito: Solana Beach, Calif.

Volunteer:  Brian P. Winfield, CLU

Grant provides ongoing support of the shelter, school-based counseling and educational programs for youth who are homeless

Seton Youth Shelters: Virginia Beach, Va.

 

$5,000 Award

Volunteer:  Mark Dorfman, CLU, ChFC

Grant funds substance abuse and prevention program through individual and group counseling, group presentations, workshops, family support groups, psychosocial and psychological evaluations, and a mentoring program

OHEL Children's Home & Family Services: Brooklyn, N.Y.

Volunteer:  Gregory B. Gagne, ChFC

Grant funds the production costs of marketing materials and development of educational outreach programs about Make-A-Wish Foundation

Make-A-Wish Foundation - New Hampshire: Manchester, N.H.

Volunteer:  David J. Malone, CLU, ChFC

Grant provides free health care for children regardless of patients’ ability to pay

Children's Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center:  Pittsburgh, Pa.

 

$2,500 Award

Volunteer:  Barbara C. Archer, CLU, CFP

$2,500 funds the Urban Arts Program, which promotes arts education to St. Louis area children between the ages of 6 and 17

Center of Creative Arts: St. Louis, Mo.

Volunteer:  Howard L. Barto, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 funds a curriculum-based drug and alcohol prevention program for youth in middle school

Discovery Counseling Center: Danville, Calif.

Volunteer:  Richard J. Callahan, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 provides tuition assistance for elementary students from low-income families

Family Aid-Catholic Education (FACE): Oakland, Calif.

Volunteer:  Louis P. Di Cerbo II, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 funds hypertension research and educates young children (pre-K to Grade 3) about the importance of healthy food choices and daily exercise

National Hypertension Association: New York, N.Y.

Volunteer:  Richard L. Farrar, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 provides funds for the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house in Greater Birmingham

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham: Fairfield, Ala.

Volunteer:  John F. Glass, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 teaches a holistic educational program to educators in local schools

Kids at Hope: Phoenix, Ariz.

Volunteer:  Stan E. Graber, CLU, LUTCF

$2,500 provides beds for children and babies in low-income families

Furniture Mission of South Dakota:  Sioux Falls, S.D.

Volunteer:  Robert S. Kadilak

$2,500 provides automatic electronic defibulators to use in program buildings for people with disabilities

Beaver County Rehabilitation Center: New Brighton, Pa.

Volunteer:  William E. Whitaker, CLU, ChFC

$2,500 helps fund the Emergency Assistance Program, which provides assistance to families in crisis after a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis

National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Greater Washington Chapter: Seattle, Wash.
